Two separate credential tracks

These tracks are never combined into a single progress percentage. A state contractor license and a local electrician credential answer different questions.

Comparison of the state OCILB contractor track and local electrician track
State OCILB contractor trackLocal electrician track
State-level contractor credentialJurisdiction-specific credential
Focused on qualifying contractorsMay cover apprentices, trainees, journeymen, electricians, or local contractors
Administered by OCILBAdministered by a city or local authority

Does not replace local registration or permitsDoes not automatically create OCILB contractor status

Why both may matter

Commercial service call in a city with its own licensing

A Beltz crew performs electrical work on a qualifying commercial project. The company works under a qualifying individual's OCILB electrical contractor license, and the city may still require separate contractor registration and permits before work begins.

Residential change-out inside Toledo

A field electrician may need a Toledo journeyman or trainee credential for the work classification, even though the company already holds a state contractor license.

Apprentice building toward two different standards

Locally tracked apprenticeship hours support a Toledo journeyman route. OCILB experience rules are evaluated separately by the board — the same work may count differently under each standard.

Ohio has no universal statewide journeyman license

Ohio Chapter 4740 does not establish one universal statewide journeyman electrician license. Cities and other authorities having jurisdiction may impose their own apprentice registration, journeyman examination, electrician certification, contractor registration, renewal, continuing-education, and permit requirements. Requirements vary by municipality and project location — check the authority having jurisdiction before relying on a local credential.

State Electrical Contractor License

Chapter 4740 primarily covers contractors responsible for electrical work on qualifying commercial construction projects. It is a contractor credential, not a statewide journeyman electrician card.

Local Apprentice / Journeyman / Electrician Requirements

Cities and other authorities having jurisdiction may impose their own registration, examination, renewal, CE, and permit requirements. Toledo is configured first.

Open local pathways

State OCILB

OCILB standard examination pathway

The most common route to the Ohio OCILB Electrical Contractor license for a qualifying individual with five years of electrical-trade experience.

State OCILB

Alternative-experience pathway

Board review required — not an automatic qualification.

Experience that does not fit the standard five-immediately-preceding-years route may still be considered by the OCILB Electrical Section.

State OCILB

Military-service pathway

Potential military pathway — confirm with OCILB.

Uniformed-service electrical work may support an application. The board makes all determinations; no approval, expedited processing, or fee waiver is promised here.

State OCILB

Out-of-state examination pathway

Possible out-of-state examination pathway — official review required.

Holders of a substantially similar out-of-state occupational license may have an alternate route.

State OCILB

Reciprocity pathway

Possible reciprocity pathway — verify current agreement.

Reciprocity is separate from the out-of-state examination pathway and depends entirely on a current written agreement.
